Job Description

Overview:

The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce is a progressive, well-respected business association with approximately 900 members.  The Chamber maintains a solid financial position.

After serving 12 years as Chamber President, Mike Wagoner has chosen to retire this year, and we are seeking a dynamic and talented individual to become his successor.

Our Chamber is greatly appreciative of Mike’s leadership, and we are pleased that he and his wife, Sandy, will continue to reside in our community.

Reports To:  Board of Directors

Position Summary

The President is responsible and accountable to the Board of Directors to provide executive leadership to the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce.  The Board has identified three areas of focus beyond the core skills and abilities listed below.  These are:

Increasing value for each member of the organization through leading-edge technological applications, including traditional and digital media platforms.

Collaboration and advocacy to build alliances and partnerships with key constituencies that will be vital to driving economic growth in our region.

Meeting financial performance standards that will enable the Chamber to increase the Chamber’s reserves over time.

Professional Experience

Minimum of 5-10 years management/executive level experience in a business-related field or other leadership position, including supervision of professional staff and oversight of finances.

Previous Chamber management experience preferred.  Chamber Institute training is a plus.

Working knowledge of local, regional and state-level political systems and experience in developing collaborative relationships in these areas.

Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required, or comparable professional training and experience attained through military, industry or association service.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Position:

Specific duties/responsibilities include efficient and effective execution of activities in the following essential areas:

  • Support to the business community
  • Community relationship building and public relations
  • Coordination of the Chamber’s annual program of work
  • Budgeting and financial stability
  • Membership maintenance and growth
  • Organizational structure, operating procedures and staff supervision
  • Motivation of volunteers and rewarding those who contribute
  • Sound management practices
  • Community vision and program implementation

The President serves as Chief Executive Officer for the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce and directly supervises the Chamber employees.

The President is responsible for providing the leadership, direction and administration for all aspects of Chamber activities.

The President will actively represent the Chamber’s mission and implement activities for the betterment of the business community.

Serves as the Secretary to the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, preparing meeting agendas, recording proceedings of meetings and producing the official minutes.

Manages Chamber business within the framework of an established budget approved by the Board of Directors.

Manages Chamber income and expenses to achieve annual budgeted net income.

Approves all disbursements of the Chamber, in accordance with the association’s bylaws.

Oversees all accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and maintaining membership database functions.

Oversees the Chamber master event calendar for Chamber-sponsored events.

Oversees all Membership Services functions to attract new members and retain existing members.

Oversees activities, goals and objectives of Chamber Committees.

Oversees Chamber digital media activities and maintenance and updating of the Chamber website.

Performs internal and external communications and marketing.

Serves as the primary point of contact for the Chamber with the Morehead City Ports Committee, Carteret County Transportation Committee, Allies for Cherry Point Tomorrow, Carteret County Economic Development office, Crystal Coast Tourism Authority, Crystal Coast Hospitality Association  and Carteret County Beach Commission.

Coordinates the Chamber’s Board-Level Strategic Planning Conference.

Coordinates the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Crystal Ball awards program.

Coordinates the Leadership Carteret program.

Coordinates the annual Outrageous Customer Service awards program.

Develops Government & Public Affairs programming, including preparation of the annual Legislative Agenda.

Executes public policy resolutions and position papers as approved by the Board of Directors.

Develops tourism marketing messages and tools that are complementary and deliver a consistent message in promoting Carteret County as a preferred travel and tourism destination.

Maintains effective communications networks with all appropriate tourism development and promotional organizations.

Possess good communications and interpersonal skills and have demonstrated competencies in grammar, spelling and writing.

Be capable of working independently and coordinating and conducting a variety of activities, under minimum supervision.

Be able to comprehend material dealing with a wide range of topics.

Possess tact, poise and self-confidence and consistently demonstrate these traits in a professional manner.

Present a positive, business-like image in dealing with business representatives and the general public.

Be able to make quick, accurate assessments of situations and people’s needs, and by asking pertinent questions, be able to make judgments on how to best solve each situation.

Be committed to producing high-quality work and providing outstanding customer service.

Be proficient in working in a computerized office environment, with the ability of using various, required software.

Maintain his/her health and appearance in a manner appropriate for office work.

Compensation & Benefits

The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce offers a competitive base salary for the position of President, negotiable in accordance with experience.

The Chamber provides group health and dental insurance coverage for all employees (currently at no additional cost to employees).

The Chamber offers a 401K Retirement Plan to its employees after one year of continuous employment.  The Chamber will make payroll deductions for those employees who participate, matching up to 3 percent of income.  Individual employees may contribute the percentage allowed by law.

The Chamber provides paid vacation and holiday leave and has a personal/sick leave policy.

Employees are expected to use their personal vehicles for business travel, and when this occurs, employees will be reimbursed at the current North Carolina Department of Revenue rate allowed for business-related travel.
