Volunteer Opportunities Abound

The Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee presents four John C. Beitz Service Person of the Quarter Luncheons each year to honor representatives of the Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard. The MAC presents each honoree with a U.S. flag that is folded and placed in a triangular wooden case with an attractive glass top and a commemorative brass plate.

The luncheons are open to all Chamber members and their guests. Chamber members are encouraged to become a luncheon sponsor and/or provide merchandise or gift certificates to be awarded to the honorees at these events.

The MAC hosts a Military Fun Day event in the fall for active duty personnel and their spouses/dates to enjoy a day of recreation at the Crystal Coast. In the past, this has included excursions to Cape Lookout National Seashore along with an outstanding pork chop cookout, and homemade desserts contributed by community volunteers.

The MAC participates in the Carteret County Veterans Day Parade held each year in Morehead City. It is the largest Veterans Day observance in North Carolina.

During the Christmas holidays, the MAC encourages the contribution of home-baked goods, such as cookies, brownies, and other desserts for distribution to active duty service men and women, many of whom are away from home for the very first time. This “Cookies for the Troops” project typically collects thousands of treats and holiday cards to distribute.
